Description
The Black-lined Plated Lizard is a large, thick-bodied plated lizard with a large, robust head. The back is reddish-brown with well-defined, black-edged, yellow dorso-lateral stripes, and often with yellow streaks down the backbone. The belly is cream to yellow-white.
Distribution
The Black-lined Plated Lizard is found in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga province of South Africa, through to Zimbabwe and adjacent regions to Northern Namibia, reaching Gabon and the lower Congo.
Breeding
The female lays 4 - 9 eggs in an abandoned rodent burrow, that may be reused subsequently. Incubation takes 70 - 80 days; hatchlings measure 160 - 180 mm.
Diet
The diet of the Black-lined Plated lizard consists of grasshoppers and beetles and snails.
