A team comprising Kruger National Park (KNP) rangers and members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) wounded and arrested a suspect after a shoot-out in the N'wanetsi ranger section of the KNP. He was one of three armed suspects, two of whom escaped to Mozambique. The encounter took place on the afternoon of December 11, 2011.
The KNP / SANDF team recovered four recently removed rhino horns and a hunting rifle. Further investigation led to the discovery of one rhino carcass. The team is still searching for other carcasses. Since January this year 431 rhino have been killed throughout South Africa, 244 of them in the KNP. A total of 212 suspected poachers have been arrested, of which 78 arrests were made in the KNP.
