The Dreamfields "Wild about Soccer' project has been running for some time in the Kruger National Park in Skukuza and Punda Maria.
The BaPhalaborwa region was added to the line up for 2010 and nine schools from the BaPhalaborwa area enjoyed a full day of environmental education and soccer at the Lulekani Community Soccer Stadium.
The project, administered and sponsored by Dreamfields, encourages environmental education through soccer and links organisations such as SANParks through these efforts. Each participating school is donated a full soccer kit, including boots, shirts, shorts, socks and soccer balls for their school for the continued promotion of sport in the school environment.
The day started with environmental education for the learners offered by the People and Conservation staff of the Letaba Rest Camp in the Nxanatseni Region of the Kruger National Park.
A boys and girls round robin tournament was then held between the participating schools, with matches of 15 minutes a side until the eventual champions were crowned for both the boys and the girls.
This event was received in a very positive light by all participants and the local co-ordinator of sport for schools in Lulekani, and all look forward to it becoming an annual event.
