The Honorary Rangers (HR) have declared war on alien plants. Armed with their knapsack sprayers and metal spikes HRs of the Lowveld region targeted the invasive queen of the night (Cereus jamacaru), in the Orpen area of the Kruger National Park (KNP).
Neither buffalo nor elephant deterred the workparty from sweeping the area for this invaisve transformer as they surveyed the area in on July 4 and 5, 2007. Under the watchful eye of Kingfisherspruit section ranger, Richard Sowry, the group spiked and sprayed each of the 114 plants detected.
The queen of the night stays green in winter, which makes July an ideal time to perform the controls. This was a follow-up from a similar exercise last year and the HRs hope to do the same again next year. The 'hackers' stayed at Kempiana which is close to Orpen.
