More than a hundred countries have joined hands to support the creation of a huge cave on an ice-bound island just 1,000km from the North Pole on the Norwegian island of Svalbard. The cave will be concreted, fenced in and guarded with steel airlock doors and motion detectors.
Guard dogs were deemed unnecessary as the cave will be in the heart of polar bear country. The cave is not designed to guard important secrets, just seeds. Seeds to act as insurance in the case of a global catastrophe and to back up the existing 1,400 seed banks around the world.
