Thirty years later, Sonja Sussens and Marsena Hubbard are still corresponding between South Africa and the United States. They became pen pals while still at school, and now correspond by email. Marsena has taken her first trip out of North America to meet up with Sonja, who lives in Hoedspruit.
One of the first places they visited was the Kruger National Park, where a highlight was seeing three lionesses looking for an impala meal.
Sonja and Marsena, together with their children, are also going to pay a visit to the south coast. Marsena says that South Africa is "gorgeous" and would gladly visit again. The pen pals, who have never really lost contact since they were small girls, have met twice before when Sonja visited Marsena in her home state of Iowa.
