Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries are uniting to try and resolve elephant management strategies. The Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique reports that SADC conservation staff met in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe between May 25 and 27 to try and draft a common strategy.
The participants decided to set up a regional Elephant Coordination Unit to raise funds for common projects. Proposed activities also include a census of the entire elephant population in the SADC member states. Human-elephant conflicts, trophy quotas and inter-country elephant migrations were also discussed.
