Lucy Nhlapo, head of tourism and marketing in the Kruger National Park (KNP) kick-started the Keep Kruger Clean campaign for the 6th consecutive year on July 25. Using "Vukani the Vulture", the campaign is targeting people's behaviour when it comes to littering in Kruger.
"It is so important to us, that we cannot stop this campaign because KNP receive more than 1.4 million visitors per year. The increase in the number of people means an increase in the number of many other things, one of which is littering" said Ms Nhlapo.
The objectives are to create awareness in and outside the park about the dangers of littering and to educate pupils about the important of clean environment." We want to involve communities, staff, business associates and society at large to say, please help us to keep Kruger clean," says Nhlapo.
This year the campaign focused on activities at the following gates: Punda Maria, Phalaborwa, Orpen, Numbi, and Crocodile Bridge while the main event was at Kruger Gate. The activities followed the theme "Collectively striving for a clean Kruger and healthy environment". This allowed pupils from the neighbouring communities to participate at the gates closest to them.
